Did you know food waste makes up nearly 25% of the rubbish in a black bin? The good news is that food waste can easily be recycled in your green bin and you don’t need a garden waste subscription to recycle it!
To help promote this important message, over the next few weeks, West Berkshire Council will be placing stickers on black bins to remind residents to recycle their food waste and put it in the green bin.
Supporting the ‘putting waste in its place’ campaign, West Berkshire Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, Steve Ardagh-Walter said: “We want to avoid waste going to landfill and encourage our residents to recycle as much as possible. If food waste ends up in a landfill site, it breaks down and releases methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. By recycling our food waste we can use it to produce compost for soil improvement and help to protect the environment.”
You can recycle food waste in your green bin (or kerbside caddy, where available). Items include fruit and vegetables, meat, fish and bones (no red meat bones), bread and pastries, tea bags, coffee grounds, cheese and eggs plus plate scrapings.
